The agency is proud to be internationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, the American Corrections Association, and the National Commission on Correctional Health Care reflecting the commitment of the Sheriff’s Office to continually improve the quality of law enforcement service provided to the citizens of Charleston County. COLUMBIA – The SC Department of Public Safety recognized law enforcement officers and agencies Tuesday for their efforts in 2013 to enforce the state’s DUI laws and remove impaired drivers from South Carolina roadways.
SCDPS presented awards to officers and agencies in several categories and held drawings for agencies to win equipment and vehicles during the 9th Annual DUI Enforcement Recognition and 2013 Law Enforcement DUI Challenge Ceremonies. Several agencies qualified to draw for one of 20 digital in-car video systems or two fully equipped police vehicles to use in DUI enforcement efforts. Nominated officers were recognized as DUI Heroes and will receive pins in bronze, silver or gold to honor their DUI arrest accomplishments in 2013. State law requires all South Carolinians who are convicted of DUI to successfully complete the department’s ADSAP before they can be eligible for relicensing by the S.C. Department of Public Safety.
The ultimate goal of the program is to improve highway safety by providing assessment, education, intervention, and treatment services for DUI offenders in an effort to reduce their risk of committing another DUI in the future. First time DUI offenders in South Carolina will be required to complete a 20 hour DUI education class.
